How do I calculate how much cornice I will need?
To calculate the total quantity required, you’ll need the linear meterage (lm) of where it is to be installed and the length per unit of the product you want – this can be found on our website.
You’ll need to add 10% waste to your total meterage (to allow for what is lost when cutting/joining), divide it by the length of the profile you’re using and round it up to the nearest whole number.
eg. Your room has a 17.5lm, so you’ll add 10% (1.75lm) to get 19.25lm. The cornice you want is 3m per length so you’ll divide 19.25 by 3 to get 6.41. Then round that up to 7 lengths required.
I have an original cornice. Can you replicate it? If so, how do I send you a template?
Yes, we can replicate original exterior and interior cornice and would do so by making a custom mould. Costs of this vary depending on the design, location and material.
However, to make the mould, we first need a template of your existing cornice. We can come and take a template on your behalf, which would be quoted on based on location and requirements. If you would like to make the template yourself, it is a simple enough process:
- Using a multitool, make a cut in your existing cornice, getting as close to the wall and ceiling as is practical.
- Insert stiff card in the cut made. It may help to remove the inner corner of the paper to allow a snug and accurate fit between ceiling and wall.
- Trace the existing cornice shape on the card.
Once you have the template, you can send it to us via email. It is important that the template retains the correct dimensions when being scanned in to a computer.
Do you fit as well as supply?
Yes, we do. Please contact us for a quote.
What is fibrous plaster?
The term ‘fibrous plaster’ is used to describe a thin lightweight modular construction composed of hessian (or ‘jute scrim’ as it is also known) soaked in gypsum plaster and cast in a mould. It is strengthened by sawn timber laths and ribs which are also used for fixing and support. The technique superseded solid lime and gypsum plaster for fine decoration in the late 19th century and is the principal form used today for cornices and other fine decorative work.
What is a polyurethane moulding?
Polyurethane is a type of synthetic material that grew in popularity during World War II. It’s known for being quite durable yet flexible, and is used to make many products that surround you today. The manufacture of cornice and other architectural mouldings take advantage of this material’s characteristics in the fact that they are lightweight, durable and easy to install.
Which is better fibrous plaster or polyurethane cornice?
Making the right choice depends on many factors, such as; the building’s heritage, personal taste and preference, where the product will be installed, and the skill-set of the installer. Whilst polyurethane mouldings are lightweight and durable, they cannot offer the same level of detail, versatility, and adaptability that can be achieved with fibrous plaster.
What cornice is right for my home?
The ceiling height, area of your room, age of the building, and your own style are key elements in making the right decision. However, with our extensive experience, we can offer you the very best advice in choosing cornices and mouldings pleasing to the eye and sympathetic with your property’s period.
