Plaster Dado Rail Panelling – Whats the Difference Between Dado Rails and Panel Rails

Panel Rail

  • Purpose: Panel rails create a framed look on walls, offering the appearance of recessed or raised panels. Their primary function is decorative, adding elegance and structure to your walls.
  • Placement: Place panel rails at any height to create rectangular or square panels. This flexibility allows you to cover part or all of a wall based on your design.
  • Aesthetic Effect: Panel rails bring a formal look to spaces like dining rooms, hallways, and staircases. As a result, they add depth and character.

Dado Rail

  • Purpose: Dado rails protect walls from scuffs and scratches caused by furniture. They also divide the lower and upper sections of walls for a classic design effect.
  • Placement: Typically, dado rails sit 24 to 36 inches from the floor, about chair height. This placement adds both form and function.
  • Aesthetic Effect: Dado rails often divide wall treatments, such as paint or wallpaper. As a result, they create a classic, structured look that pairs well with wainscoting for added texture.

In short, Plaster Panel Rails and Dado Rails each offer unique benefits. For those looking to add purely decorative detailing, panel rails create visually interesting frames. On the other hand, dado rails provide both function and style, ideal for those who want added protection along with a timeless design.

Both types of rails can elevate your interior spaces, adding character, structure, and value to your home or project.
