A Brief History of Georgian Coving

The Georgian period (1714–1837), marked by the reigns of Kings George I through George IV, revolutionised architectural aesthetics. During this era, designers drew inspiration from classical Greek and Roman architecture, which emphasised symmetry, proportion, and intricate detail.

Architects frequently used covings to adorn the junctions of walls and ceilings in grand homes and public buildings. Early Georgian covings often reflected the restrained Palladian style, characterised by simple yet elegant designs. However, as the period advanced, craftsmen added intricate neoclassical details, such as egg-and-dart patterns, dentils, and floral motifs.

Additionally, craftsmen relied on plaster to create covings, as it allowed for highly detailed and precise designs. These features not only enhanced the beauty of interiors but also concealed imperfections at the junctions of architectural elements. Today, designers and homeowners still favour Georgian covings for their timeless elegance and ability to harmonise with both period and contemporary interiors.

High-Quality Craftsmanship

Our skilled artisans meticulously handcraft each Georgian coving from premium plaster. These designs showcase clean lines, symmetrical patterns, and gentle curves, embodying the principles of Georgian design. As a result, our covings suit both traditional and modern interiors effortlessly.
